I told myself I wasn't going to do this, but you probably knew that I would anyways.
My close friend Soulstar, editor-in-chief of Ohiohustle.com recently interviewed an unknown rapper named Matt O'Neail about his involvement in the hip-hop game in Ohio. I immediately took it as a funny inside joke from first seeing the horrible photoshopped promo pic, hilarious ignorant statements, skyrocketing arrogance, and blatant homo-eroticism. It was so funny that it also irritated me, to a degree, from how cleverly Soulstar was able to portray the average white "Show promoter, emcee with a label doin' big thangs", in the Glass City. Then I re-read it, did a few minutes of research, and found out that Matt O'Neail is actually a real person. Instead of going on a wordy three-page rant on everything thats wrong with what I just read, I will just break down this interview, sinew by sinew.

Soulstar starts,
"Soulstar - You're from Toledo, why dont' you tell the readers what the Hip-Hop scene in the Glass City's like?

Matt O'Neail - To be totally honest the hip hop scence is in decline in toledo. no one takes the stuff serious any more and the ones who do are all stuck in that 90's gansta 4xL crap that makes you look like your going to rob someone. what kind of crap is that"

Okay. Matt is right. The hip-hop scene in Toledo is in decline. To my knowledge, Toledo has one good, strong lyrical representative of true hip-hop, and that is Big J, the White Wonder. Rap and hip-hop are two different things, and ignoramus's such as Matt, tend to forget that. HE goes on to state that the only artists in Toledo who take it serious "are all stuck in that 90's gansta 4xL crap that makes you look like your going to rob someone". Apparently, he needs to brush up on his 90's hip-hop fashion history, cause if he did, he would realize the 4xL tall tee was first regionalized by the west coast, before it was adopted by the south, thus spreading throughout, post-millenium. Also, to make allegations that the only ones who take their art serious "look like your going to rob someone", is bogus. Anyone can observe that the majority of the current movers and shakers in Toledo rap are predominantly black, and give in to the trend of skinny jeans, nerd glasses, and piercings, which is just as much of a fad NOW, as tall tees were, THEN. Popularized by Jola as a "White boy swag" movement.

First off, "beat you up and drink some booze" type lyrics are just as prevailent, everywhere. And if its coming from, what you refer to as, "some small body broke fucks that come to the shows,try to get their peeps in for free cause their broke too,look like a little kid in thier big brothers hand me downs, bitchin about everything". Remember, other than being an artist, you are also a show promoter, so it is by your actions, and responsibility, that those same "small broke body fucks". In this case, it is your fault. Furthermore, to make a "statement that "the white crowd in toledo has NO DAMN CLUE WHATS HOT IN HIP HOP NOWADAYS" is retardedly racist. In fact, it is less ignorant, and racist for me to do a whites only show. The reflection this has on me, as a white emcee is sad. Also, to suggest that I should buy a watch or chain instead of a sack of weed insinuates that you think a flashy clothing accessory is a much more "hot" and necessary asset in your supremely skewed view on what hip-hop is.

"Soulstar - You own your own independent label, M.O.E. Records. Are you the only artist on that label, or do you have a line-up?

Need I say more? The fact that the rappers with the names Hydro the Honkey, The Ghetto Cracka, and Lil Spliff are connected to his global business plan is enough for me to get a hearty gut laugh.

"Soulstar - What are you doing to help brand your label?

Matt O'Neail - PROMOTING THE HELL OUT OF IT EVERYDAY. I get sick of these artists saying there all about hip hop then do it as a weekend gig. that makes me want to bitch slap all of em. You in this to get fame and fortune yo not just a couple bucks and a bar skkezer. Paper fliers and radio play are musts."

OKay. Promoting is (duh), the number one thing you can do to assist in branding your label. In most cases it is a weekend gig. What is your dayjob, Matt O'Neail? DO you do "hip-hop" or even anything in the urban music market as a full-time job? Also to say "you in this to get fame and fortune yo not just a couple bucks and a bar skeezer" is so sad and immature to say. I am in this to be happy, and express myself. That's what hip-hop is. A vehicle for freedom of creative self expression. Matt, YOU are not in this for the right reason, and it breaks my heart.

What other bogus spewage is about to leak out off MR.O'Neails mouth?

"Soulstar - Now you've had some problems in the past with a few Toledo artists. Has that been squashed or is there still tension between you and them?

Matt O'Neail - No one in toledo is on my level so i could give a flyin fuuuk what they do. I AM TOLEDO's HOTTEST PROMOTER HANDS DOWN!! Show me someone who can match my name in the glass that "a radio dj...."

I'm now curious. If no one in Toledo is on your level, who is? Big Lo, Hydro the Honkey? Fingaz? Who are they? And what level would you say you're on? Anyone that I would know? I know some DJs in Toledo, who hold weight, yet I still don't know who you are? How exactly do they match your name?

Douche bag swag. Thats not only a funny thing to say, but it actually does make sense with you. Confidence is key. I agree with that. In being asked how you stand out in the saturated hip-hop game in Ohio, you reply with arrogance, "the brand new swag", having new shoes, a new hair cut, and rocking rhinestones. Hmmm.... you know who usually always has confidence, and rhinestones? Drag queens.

My thoughts on the recent signing of two local rappers, in my area.

I recently sent an email, regarding my tactfully worded thoughts on the recent confusion of swag rap, and hip hop.
All anger aside, this is a refined version of my opinion, regarding the recent signing of two less-than-original urban recording artists in the 419. But then again, if you're an Ohio-dwelling hip-hop head, you know what I'm talking about.

I'm completely agreeing that all types of rap music coming together, originally, is what made hip hop diverse. LL Cool J, NWA, Public Enemy, Sir Mix-A-Lot, A Tribe Called Quest, 2 Live Crew, to name a few, were all very successful artist from all parts of the broad spectrum, which is a beautiful thing. The only difference between then and now, is that they were the innovators of what would eventually become watered down, with certain interchangeable aspects, present in this situation. Also, a good thing, making artists realize that they didn't need to keep their sound stiff and regional.
So we are on agreement 100% that the diversity makes it beautiful. That's a given to anyone who enjoys music, with an open mind. But, if you had misunderstood me, I was really just saying that when things like this show that an urban music demographic is much less eager for something creative, and cool, and different than say, when ATCQ did it. Or, even Natas! People still hate Natas. I am fully aware of the mechanics of club shit. And I try to not deal with a slew of janky local, hole-in-the-wall events with 30 rappers in a night, and no pay. Maybe one will get discovered by a washed up producer, who desperately needs new faces for his backdrop betty label. Oh, wait... that just happened with two rappers! I'm too busy making an album with Kool Keith, the innovator of experimental rap. The true innovator of not giving a fuck in the rap game.
The mechanics of business, are important, ethical, efficient things to apply to both the management, and promotion of your art, and are in that case, very vital to the success of the product of your creativity.
But the mechanics of art (or in this case "mechanics of the hip-hop game"), goes against the genuine creation of art.
And when your art. The very expression of your soul, your only passion, is overruled by business mechanics, you, the artist, and your ability for true artistic expression are conflicted.
So, when I see people making moves like this, it's not me saying, "AH! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!? YOU GOT SIGNED, BUT YOU SUCK!!!". It's simply expressing that such a transient, nonsensical, talentless hybrid of the thing I love is the only thing mainstream media wants. It's like a stab to the the heart.
Do you see what I'm saying?
This is not a lack of knowledge, when it comes to mechanics. This is my frustration at what I love to do becoming a series of mechanics, over time, eventually getting watered-down to rappers, NOT emcees, wearing the same thing, and talking about the same thing.
It's a fashion show. That's why I'm not at the club. I'd rather be at home, reading, and maybe making myself smarter than the majority of whack rappers. I hate stupidity. Most rappers are stupid. I define stupid rap by a slew of nonsensical words and thoughts, strung together in a lazy dialect of English, that apparently people with brains don't understand. Though nice for the occasional listen, session of clearing your mind, and getting crunk. Not really substantial listening, but still music.
And, I never said once that they shouldn't get there shine because they were different than they majority. In fact, I say congratulations. I'm happy that they have their success. There's no jealousy here. It's not the situation I want. However, it is what they want. They have it. Cool beans. Right on. Fuck yeah.
I'm merely stating that the newest representatives of our state, also happen to represent everything bad about rap music right now, so it's either they learn, or they suffer the fate of most rappers in their new sub-genre. This represents what I'm against.
I rap about the dad that doesn't want to be in my life, and my grandma having cancer, and being in love. Then again, the demographic for the majority of urban music doesn't want to listen to ACTUAL life problems. They want fantasy and escape from their own life problems. They don't want to relate to anything. If someone wants to listen to some crazy talking kid who wants to rap about a nerd boy white swag, be my guest. I've come to accept this to be just as much a fantasy mechanism for people, as any bogus, ridiculous horrorcore story is.
General demographic does not want creative, emotive, relate-able hip-hop.

But hey, I "obviously have no clue of either the history or the mechanics of this Hip-Hop game."
I make good music. If you make shitty music, I don't like it.

The Brutal Truth: J Bigga is a lie.

So, apparently some drama has been started....
If you are at all familiar with my history as a producer, you know that I used to go under the name "Wake Up Will", and make scene electro-rap with fake F-List myspace celeb, J Bigga. You can check some of his horrible music here. Just make sure you have a plastic bucket near your computer. So, J Bigga, also known as John Browning III, the grandson of John Browning, founder of Browning Firearms.
Now, J Bigga has a reputation for saying offensive, or stupid shit, for no reason. He then uses his rightfully agitated haters responses as fuel for his proud bad "reputation". Little do the majority of his fans know, J Bigga is a 30 year old computer programmer from Vegas. Very well spoken, and articulate, though hes convinced himself that his facade of a young, hip, edgy, offensive scene guy is good for his marketability. For the past few months he's been trying to get in contact with me to contribute production to his forthcoming projects", if you can even call them that.
Recently, J Bigga made one these attention-whore statements, on his myspace, twitter, and facebook. The statement goes:

"The brutal truth: being in the military doesent make you a hero. It makes you a hick."

What the hell.... I'm not a blindly submissive patriot at all, but I'm not necessarily an anti-patriotic asshole that will hide behind his freedom of speech flag, whenever confronted with why he says things like that. I'm all for having a bad reputation when it's in order, for something cool. But when you're a thirty year old who says offensive, retarded things just for the sake of saying them, is that really the angle you want to come at, for your bad reputation? On top of that, are you really going to spend that much time saying ignorant, un-educated, offensive things all for the sake of your "bad reputation :D"?

So, I asked him about this whole ordeal, in a totally mature fashion. This is the email that I sent him...

I would appreciate all of your feedback. Who is in the wrong here? I feel I was completely just, and within my right to be pissed off and offended by this DIY internet celebrities ignorant-ass, stupid comments, all for what he thinks will gain him popularity.
